Ben Ope Johnson, the Eye Behind the Lens

Framing the Vision: I started as event coverage cameraman -Ben Ope Johnson, the Eye Behind the Lens

In the fast-paced world of filmmaking, where stories are told in motion and emotions are sculpted in light, it takes more than just technical know-how to stand out; it takes vision. At www.openletter.com.ng, we continually spotlight voices shaping African creativity, and today, we shine that light behind the camera on a rare talent.
Meet Ben Ope Johnson, a remarkably talented Director of Photography whose visual storytelling continues to influence and inspire a new generation of filmmakers. With an eye for detail, a heart for authenticity, and a mind that blends innovation with cultural sensitivity, Daddy BJ, as he is fondly called, is more than a cinematographer – he is a cinematic orator and poet.
In this soul-searching and insightful conversation with Khoemizona Babalola, Ben Ope Johnson opens up about his journey, the philosophy behind his work, and the silent power of imagery in African storytelling. Whether you’re a filmmaker, an aspiring creative, or just a lover of good stories, this interview promises perspective, inspiration, and plenty of light.

A lot of people see you as a faith based filmmaker and cinematographer, what’s your take on such impression?

Well, I’m a Filmmaker using the tool to tell people messages from God. I also use film as a medium to inspire, inform, educate, and entertain my viewers at all levels. Generally, I’m an influencer.

For how long have you been in the industry and how did your journey start?

By the grace of God, I’ve been in the industry for over 20 years. I started as an events coverage cameraman.
What would you rather say is the reason why almost everybody believes that majority of the Christian faith based movie are poor and way below standard?

Possibly they are looking from production values. Worldwide, faith-based Filmmakers don’t enjoy financial balance and supports as their secular counterparts. Therefore, the little they have is what they put into making films. Maybe, if we get enough money, we will do better.
What are the likely way out to more improved faith-based productions?

We need sponsors; people who are ready to put their money into faith-based film production. Then, if the church of God in Nigeria can support us as churches in America are doing for theirs, the story will definitely change.

Why are you so passionate about seeing people, particularly young ones improve in the area of film production; you give so much with nothing in sight as rewards?

(Smiles) Making the world a better place for the entire human race should be our primary objective. I’m fulfilling my part in my little way. Moreover, I have a belief which I will like to say today: “No matter how successful you are, if you have no successor, you are a big failure.”

What would you say is the reason for the obvious rejection and castigation of secular movie producers by their faith based counterparts?

Maybe it is because of their movie contents; showing obscene and unedifying things.

There are complaints of being cheated by some crew members who used to work for some Christian faith based producers, what has your own experience been like?

Well, I do not know about this.
What is your advice for new film makers that are springing up?

Every aspiring Filmmaker must be passionate about excellence. They should turn their talent to skill, learn and unlearn. They must never push others down while trying to climb the ladder of progress.

What new thing should we be expecting from you soon?

By the grace of God, I want to organize a filmmaking workshop.

Any suggestion for Nigerian government considering the state of the economy?

Vocational training should be part of our education. They should implement it into the curricula of primary schools up to higher institutions of learning. Secondly, God has blessed us with good land and good weather that is farming friendly; so agriculture should be encouraged in all sectors.

Ben Ope Johnson doesn’t just capture images, he captures essence. As we close the curtain on this conversation, one thing becomes crystal clear: his camera is not just a tool, it’s an extension of purpose. His ability to tell deeply human stories without words, to direct light and shadow with precision, and to make audiences feel every frame is what places him in a class of his own.
In a time when African filmmakers are carving their place on the global stage, Daddy BJ is not just following the trend, he is exemplary pacesetter. His commitment to craft, culture, and mentorship makes him not just a cinematographer, but a custodian of visual heritage and icon to many.
At Openletter we are proud to spotlight such astounding brilliance. Here’s to more frames, more stories, and more African creatives who dare to see differently.
